seriously my favorite thing to do. graffiti book club is growing and getting more fun by the minute! i love spending my time with such an incredibly smart, kind, funny, creative, welcoming, and well-read group of women! this evening, we dressed to the theme of our books! and can i just say boy did these ladies commit! they showed up in sequins, with props, and with commentary! next month we bedazzle!!!! my heart is bursting with literary love! ❤️

Pass the Paper: A Collective Journaling Experience

Join us for a special community collaboration between Craft Your Story @craftyourstore and Kristina Ambrosia. During this hour and half(ish) session you will get the chance to build and bind your own journal that we will then begin to fill with stories - the result of a series of writing prompts used throughout the class.

After a short guided meditation we will not only record bits of our individual stories but also get the chance to see how our stories might ‘sit’ together collectively on a page.

I came here to write… Here is what I did instead

I came here to write…
Here is what I did instead.

I listened to a Mumford and Son record on a Victrola that looked like a suitcase.

I roasted in the sun in a beat and bent metal turquoise chair in the middle of a dirt yard.

I met a Vodou priestess who keeps a dead bird in her freezer.

I bought an adorable and outrageous pair of overalls stitched with red and orange hummingbirds.

I observed the beauty of a tumbleweed as it blew across the road.

I learned just how quickly the American dream can turn into a derelict shack in the middle of nowhere.

I studied elements of craft.

I drank coffee with chicory out of a gifted mug and thought about where I’ve been and who I love.

I taught myself how to install an HP print driver.

I noted the allure of contrast - red, yellow, and fuchsia flowers popping from a brown belly.

I went to Walmart.

I read.

I got lost - a lot.

I spent too much money on souvenirs.

I prayed.

I admired the dedication people have to their art - even when it is ugly.

I noticed color swatches in the sky as it merged with the ground until it became a dark veil.

I experienced secrets the desert is holding.

I acknowledged that my process is just fine the way it is.

I held a hand to make a leap.
 
I traveled to the end of the world.
I curated stories.
I understood that this is the only way to survive it.

2020 “I’m not an albatross,” I protested.

2020
“I’m not an albatross,” I protested.
“Ok, what are you,” she replied.
“Hmmm…a hummingbird…I think I’m a hummingbird…”

It was the start of the pandemic lockdown and my professional ballerina friend Emily was facilitating an international dance symposium where dancers were asked to find movement around pieces of poetry - poetry that she asked me to write. In an attempt at reverse engineering, I asked her to send me a short clip of her dancing - I would first craft words around her movement before she asked others to craft movement around my words. Thus, the Albatross (my written interpretation of her as a bird) took flight.

“You also should be a part of the poem.”

“I’m not an albatross,” I protested.
“Ok, what are you,” she replied.
“Hmmm…a hummingbird…I think I’m a hummingbird…”

2024
While visiting Ojai a beautiful copper hummingbird bangle sang to me. It now sits perched on my wrist to remind me of where I want to migrate - the sun soaked state of California.

2025
My self-identified connection with the hummingbird was confirmed at a networking event this morning when Jennifer Brumbaugh of Pinnacle Life Practice spoke on the Ayurvedic Lifestyle. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicine that aims to balance out three different energy profiles known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. I knew from my yoga teacher training years ago that I was a Vata, but what I didn’t know, until today, was that each dosha is associated with a particular bird….and mine…you guessed it…the hummingbird.

i’m seriously loving what i’m seeing going down at graffiti book club! last month we made art inspired by our books, this month we made food inspired by our books, and next month we are coming dressed in character!

theresa - i expect to see that full length beaded gown IRL! reverse engineer that shit!

we also made text to text connections, text to music connections (@janiewalland - don’t forget to talk to the babysitter 😝), and laughed A LOT!!! there may also be a sprinter van cross country book tour in the making. actually cross out “may be” - there is!

Ok - he is just the coolest. Hands down, no questions asked - the coolest. I first fell in love with @thejackiegreene by way of his “Honey, I Been Thinkin About You” song. When @jeffking1211 gifted me tickets to see him, I ramped up my Jackie listening and found there actually isn’t a song I don’t like by him.

And HOLY SHIT - the guy sounds better LIVE than he even does on the records (hard to fucking do). He owned that room from the second he opened his mouth.

While listening to one song, I kept thinking to myself “I know this sound - it feels reminiscent of the Black Crowes in some places” - I looked up if there was any relation and learned that Jackie was the former lead guitarist for the band (haha! A good lesson in trusting what I know even when I don’t think I do).

Anyhow, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect date night with @jenisouthernbee . We had a flavor infused dinner at @cordeliacle known for being “Midwest Nice” (told you I’m Midwest Jeff!!!) and then hit the show at the @beachlandcle .

It felt as if we were just at an impromptu jam session in the artist’s basement. He was asking people what they wanted to hear and when one man called out “A Thing Called Rain” from his 2005 Sweet Somewhere Bound (coolest title ever) album Jackie was like I know the chords but may have forgotten the words - can you pull them up on your phone. He then invited the man on stage to ‘feed him the lines’ - it was awesome and prob the best moment ever for this superfan lol.

This Monterey native (of course this only makes me like him more) has not only been praised by the New York Times for his “spiritual balladry” but also called the “cowboy poet” (see spotify bio).

I already can’t wait to see him again (with a request for more harmonica) and obv now feel like I need a shirt. And his wife and baby are the cutest!
